Born in Greece, Lt Steve Pisanos arrived in America as a teenager with a dream of becoming a pilot.   He went on to get his private pilot's license and initially flew with the British RAF 268 wing and the RAF 71 Eagle squadron, before America entered the war.  

He later transferred to the USAAF 334th Fighter Squadron and flew with them until shot down in March 1944.  He survived and served with the French Resistance until the Liberation of Paris when he was able to return to the US.

Known as "The Flying Greek," Pisanos was an Ace, flying over 100 combat missions during WW2 and 375 missions during the Vietnam War. 

He remained in the United States Air Force, retiring as Colonel, and died on the anniversary of D-Day 2016.
